The Universal Church celebrates April 17, 2016 as the fourth Sunday of Easter – Year C. It is usually referred to as ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’. For the past fifty three years, however, it has also been celebrated as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations or Vocations Sunday. Blessed Paul VI instituted Vocations Sunday in the Church 53 years ago, when the Vatican II Council was still in session. Pope Francis reminds us in his message for this year’s Vocations Sunday that each vocation is born from within the people of God, and is a gift of divine mercy; and the Church, being the house of mercy, serves as the ‘soil’ where vocations take root, mature and bear fruit. In the course of this Eucharist, let us pray for more vocations in the Church. In the entrance antiphon of this day’s Holy Mass we pray: “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord; by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, alleluia.”
