Mother Church celebrates Sunday, June 29, 2014, as the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, a liturgical feast in honour of the martyrdom in Rome of the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It is observed on the 29th day of June of each year. Pope Paul VI once said of these saints, “The Apostles Peter and Paul are considered by the faithful, and rightly, as the first pillars, not only of the Holy Roman See, but also of the Universal Church of the living God, spread to the utmost bounds of the earth.” Both Apostles were martyred in Rome during the persecution against the Christians by the emperor Nero. In honouring them, the Church also celebrates the ancient foundation of the Church of Rome, which was to become the mother of all the Christian Churches. There, still lives the visible successor of Saint Peter, the Holy Father Pope Francis, “Servo servorum Dei” (Servant of the Servants of God), the 266th Successor of Peter. This feast also provides us with an opportunity to pray for our Holy Father, Pope Francis.
