I recall that when I was a student in Canada back in the 80s, a university professor took a parliamentarian to court for questioning the validity of that professor's years of research in one remote corner of Central Africa. The professor in question claimed he was out to find out why in the world monkeys twitched their noses from time to time. Imagine a topic for a professorial research!!
To that parliamentarian, and to many of us who were still struggling with doctoral research topics, undertaking research on why monkeys twitch their noses from time to time was, to put it mildly, such an aweful waste of tax-payer's money. In fact, the parliamentarian in question accused the honourable professor of making a "monkey" of the taxpayer. I don't recall how the case ended but I believe the judge just dumped it into the dustbin, where it belonged, in the first place.
You may be wondering what this has to do with this issue of AIDS originating from Cameroon. I find it truly mind-bogging that researchers would troop into African forests and spend valuable time waiting for chimpanzees to defecate so they can analyse the faeces and come up with such conclusions. This seems to me to be such an irritating and awful waste of time and money that could have gone into alleviating hunger and poverty around the world.
Admittedly, I'm as far from understanding the intricacies of medical research as earth is from Jupiter but, for heaven's sake, let these researchers give us a break! I'm not a fan of monkey meat, as Ngonyama seems to be, but I agree with him that such research, which are said to be still temporary, are merely meant to discourage those of them who enjoy monkey meat from their favourite meal. Trying to discourage them from their delicacy is, in my view, a violation of their human rights!!!! That's what it is!
If you still have the patience to read on, I'll tell you something about my first encounter with monkey meat. It hasn't been that long ago and it came accidentally. I was on a visit to Buea and a friend invited me to share a meal of antelope meat at the home of a woman, who holds a "Ph. D." in the preparation of bushmeat meals in Soppo. She's truly outstanding in that domain, believe me! She seems to have different days for preparing the meat of different animals. An antelope should have tickled out palates that day.
We were almost through what we thought was the most tasteful antelope meat we ever had when a late-comer, before taking his seat, was smart enough to ask if it was indeed antelope-meat day. The response took us by surprise: "No, no be antelope today, oooh. Na monkey meat. I no be fit get antelope today. Na tomorrow them go bringam for me." Habaa! Walahi!
Ngonyama may be scandalised by my immediate reaction, but I nearly threw up. My friend and I looked at each other with searching unasked questions in our eyes. Monkey meat!!! Habaah! Walahi! But then, the "harm" had already been done and we went through the rest of the meal in silence. Once that barrier was broken, however, I began to feel that monkey meat was, after all, just meat, like any other meat. That is why I'm waiting for the next time Ngonyama shows up here to invite him to hitch a ride with him to Buea for some tasty monkey meat.
